Bathroom Remodel Timeline: What to Expect from Start to Finish

One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners is: "How long will my bathroom remodel take?" The answer depends on the scope of your project, but understanding the typical timeline helps you plan and set expectations.

Bathroom Remodel Timelines by Scope

  • Cosmetic update (paint, fixtures, vanity swap): 1-2 weeks
  • Standard remodel (new tile, vanity, fixtures, tub/shower): 3-5 weeks
  • Full gut renovation (move plumbing, layout changes, custom tile): 5-8 weeks

Week-by-Week Breakdown: Standard Bathroom Remodel

Pre-Construction (1-3 weeks before start)

  • Final material selections and ordering
  • Permit applications submitted
  • Materials delivery scheduled
  • Temporary bathroom arrangements (if needed)

Week 1: Demolition & Rough-In

This is the most disruptive week. Our team removes existing fixtures, tile, and any materials being replaced. We then handle plumbing and electrical rough-in work. A city inspection follows before we can close walls.

Week 2: Waterproofing & Tile

Waterproofing membranes are applied to the shower area and floor. Once cured, tile installation begins - this is often the most time-consuming part of the project. Complex tile patterns and large-format tiles require extra care.

Week 3: Installations

With tile complete and grouted, we install the vanity, countertop, toilet, shower fixtures, mirrors, and accessories. Painting and trim work happen during this phase as well.

Week 4: Finishing & Punch List

Final connections, caulking, and detail work. We do a thorough cleaning and walk through the project with you to create a punch list of any items needing attention.

Common Causes of Delays

  1. Hidden water damage - Old bathrooms sometimes reveal rotted subfloors or framing once we open walls. We address these issues immediately for safety.
  2. Material backorders - Specialty tiles and custom vanities can have long lead times. We recommend making material selections early.
  3. Permit scheduling - City inspection timelines vary. We build buffer time into our schedule.
  4. Change orders - Modifications during construction require additional time. We encourage finalizing all decisions before demolition.

Tips for a Smooth Bathroom Remodel

  • Make all material selections before starting - This is the #1 way to avoid delays.
  • Plan for an alternate bathroom - If you only have one bathroom, discuss temporary arrangements with your contractor.
  • Communicate proactively - Your project manager should provide daily or weekly updates. Don't hesitate to ask questions.
  • Be decisive - Quick decisions keep the project moving. Indecision on tile, fixtures, or colors can stall progress.
